Japanese ‘age prediction machine’ is really just a mosquito tone test

February 28, 2010

And this, folks, is yet another reason why the Land of the Rising Sun is truly one of the world’s greatest places. Japan, which is famous for having ridiculously polite citizens and some of the zaniest toys known to man, has just delivered its latest gem: the Age Prediction Machine. As you might expect, the device simply emits the now-famed “mosquito tone,” which is an exceptionally high pitched frequency that can’t typically be heard by older humans. Depending on the intensity of the sound, you’re able to determine where the cutoff is between hearing it and not, thus discovering the age of whoever would be gullible enough to stand around and actually engage in this sort of lunacy. But seriously, don’t use this the day before your mother’s birthday — just ask pops which number she’s about to celebrate / not celebrate, cool?

Confirmed: Windows Mobile 6.5 to become Windows Phone Starter Edition

February 28, 2010

Windows Phone 7 Series might have been the big news out of Mobile World Congress this year, but it looks like Windows Mobile 6.5 will live on as the basis of Windows Phone Starter Edition. We’d already heard some whispers to that effect, but now it’s been confirmed by ZDNet‘s Mary Jo Foley, who got some answers about the stripped-down mobile OS directly from Redmond. It’s obviously designed to be a cheaper alternative for developing and emerging markets, much like Windows 7 Starter on the desktop, and it’ll come in versions with and without Office Mobile preloaded when it ships on devices later this year. (Office 2010 will be included when it’s officially released.) Here’s the odd thing, though: when asked which features of 6.5 have been stripped to create Starter, MS replied with a list of radio support that conspicuously omits HSDPA 3G, but includes EV-DO. Simple typo, or an attempt to force international adoption of WinPho 7 in developed countries with 3G networks? We’ll do some digging and find out.

P.S.- Just to be clear here, it appears that the family will be Windows Phone 7 Series, and then potentially two WinMo 6.5 products: Windows Phone Classic and Windows Phone Starter Edition. Only Starter has actually been confirmed at this time, though, and we still don’t know exactly how Microsoft is going to organize all of this and sell it. We’ll keep you updated.

Smartbook Logo is neither a logo nor a smartbook, actually a 3G-equipped CULV laptop

February 28, 2010

We’re ready to hand out our first award for CeBIT 2010. The most confusing product of the year ribbon goes to German company Smartbook, who’s decided to produce a portable computer with a shell design and 3G connectivity that… isn’t actually a smartbook (or what we understand the term to mean anyway). Instead of capitalizing on the built-in marketing appeal of its name, Smartbook AG staunchly persists in believing it’s a real laptop maker, and is readying a new thin-and-light machine to prove just that. To be known as the Logo, this will be an Intel CULV-powered 11.6-incher, with a 1366 x 768 resolution, Windows 7 Home Premium and a stingy 1GB of RAM on board. In other words, the Acer Timeline 1810T, only a few months later and priced to (never) sell: €699 ($944). Boy, we’ve heard of corporate hubris before but this is getting silly now.

Raidon announces HyBrid Disk SSD / hard drive combo

February 27, 2010

Not interested in piecing together your own hybrid SSD hard drive with something like SilverStone’s HDDBOOST kit? Then you might want to consider waiting for Raidon’s upcoming HyBrid Disk drive, which promises all the same benefits with none of the hassle (apart from actually installing it in your computer, that is). Complete details on this one are still a bit light, but you will apparently be able to remove the SSD and use it on its own if you like, and then have its contents automatically backed up when you put it back in its enclosure. No word on pricing just yet either, but Raidon says the drives will first be available in an internal, 3.5-inch version in April, with an external version following later in the year.
